Thompson's Green Lipped Mussel with Glucosamine may be of benefit to anyone who experiences painful, swollen, stiff joints associated with degenerative joint conditions or injury. Studies have shown that 200mg daily of green lipped mussel oil (4 capsules) for a period of 8 weeks led to an improvement in symptoms of joint disorders, such as degree and duration of morning stiffness, pain, joint mobility and night pain for 80% of participants.
In healthy joints there is a protective layer of cartilage that serves as a cushion between the adjoining bones, allowing the joint to move freely and without pain. In chronic degenerative joint conditions the cartilage starts to break down, inflammation and swelling of the joint and the tissues surrounding the affected joints may occur as well, particularly in injuries. The loss of cartilage and the inflammation lead to joint stiffness, pain and reduced mobility.
Inflammation can be viewed as a series of chemical reactions where the body produces enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) that are then involved in the activation of other chemicals called cytokines, leukotrienes and arachidonic acid. These naturally occurring chemicals produce an inflammatory response in the tissues that results in swelling, redness, heat and pain.
The green lipped mussel lipid extract manages this response by inhibiting these inflammatory chemicals in the body. It also contains natural antioxidants (carotenoids) which contribute to the anti-inflammatory effect. Glucosamine is required for healthy joint cartilage as it is a component of cartilage and also stimulates repair. As we age, our production of glucosamine declines which may increase our need for this nutrient.

Adults:
Initial dose: Take 2 capsules, twice daily for a period of 8 weeks
Maintenance dose: 1-2 capsules daily.
Green Lipped Mussel and Glucosamine should not be used if there is a known allergy or sensitivity to shellfish or crustaceans; during pregnancy and lactation; or if liver disease is present. Caution is advised in people with lung conditions and asthma.
