What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?
Alpha lipoic acid (also know as ALA or alfa lipoic acid) is a powerful antioxidant that is both fat and water soluble. It is a well known free radical scavenger that is commonly referred to as the universal antioxidant. ALA is manufactured in the body and is found in some foods, e.g. liver and yeast.
What does Alpha Lipoic Acid do?
Alpha lipoic acid is a naturally occurring compound necessary for the conversion of glucose into ATP (chemical energy). In addition to its role in food metabolism and energy, ALA supports the body’s natural defence against oxidative stress. A potent antioxidant in its own right, it also “recycles” other antioxidants such as vitamins E and C, Co-Q10 and glutathione, so they can continue to protect against free radical damage. Alfa lipoic acid has a unique ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, therefore helping normalise oxidative stress in the brain. ALA has been approved in Germany for use by GPs in support of patients with diabetic neuropathy.

What are the health benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements?
Alpha lipoic acid may support the body’s natural ability to resist oxidative stress and maintain tissue health, especially in conditions associated with improper blood glucose management, nerve damage, vascular, eye, neurological and immune function. Alfa lipoic acid is highly recommended for people regularly exposed to oxidative stressors, chemicals or toxins; and sports people.

Are there any side-effects?
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. People using medications for blood glucose control (e.g insulin) should closely monitor their blood glucose levels. People using thyroid medication should consult a health care professional before taking ALA. Protein & B vitamin supplementation is recommended with long term use.
