Resveratrol
What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a compound found in a variety of plants, where it serves to protect them from environmental stresses. It is a naturally occurring antioxidant. The most common dietary source of Resveratrol is red wine, as it is concentrated in the skin of grapes. Resveratrol supplements commonly contain extract from red wine, grape seed, and Japanese knotweed.
What are the potential health benefits of taking Resveratrol supplements?
Recent scientific research has indicated that Resveratrol activates SIRT I genes, which mimic the healthy aging benefits of caloric restriction. Resveratrol may support heart health by providing the antioxidant protection needed for healthy circulation, and by inhibiting inflammation messengers including NF kappa B.
It would appear from early in vitro and animal studies that an increased Resveratrol intake is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease and obesity whilst also increasing energy, performance and memory. Further research is continuing to investigate the full extent of Resveratrol’s health benefits for humans, including heart, brain, prostate and breast health, muscle and joint mobility, weight management, and life extension.
Are there any side effects of taking Resveratrol supplements?
Safety in pregnancy or lactation has not been established. Caution in concurrent use with anticoagulants.
