Ginkgo Biloba
The Ginkgo, or Maidenhair, is one of the oldest types of tree in the world, with individual trees that can live as long as 1000 years! It is also very unique in that it has no close living relatives. Traditional Chinese Medicine focused on the fruit of the Ginkgo, with the nuts most commonly being used to treat respiratory tract ailments. In modern times the focus has turned to extracts from the leaves of the Ginkgo, which have potent antioxidant properties due to their high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids (ginkgolides, bilobalides).
Supplementing with Ginkgo has been shown to increase oxygen levels and circulation to the brain, thus supporting mental focus, alertness, concentration and memory. Other benefits include circulation to peripheral areas of the body, healthy cardiovascular system function and more.
NB: Ginkgo should NOT be used with blood-thinning medication, or prior to surgery, without professional advice.
