West Africa’s Unseen Crisis
A desperate and largely unknown humanitarian crisis is unfolding in the Lake Chad Basin, which includes Chad, Niger and Nigeria. It is compounded as a result of the ongoing conflict with Boko Haram and the military operations to counter them. It is Africa’s fastest growing displacement crisis – over 2.6 million people have been forced to flee their homes. Over a million children are feared to be trapped in areas under the control of Boko Haram. 3.8 million people are facing severe food insecurity and going hungry and in North East Nigeria over 1 million people are one step away from famine conditions.
Through our Better World donation programme, HealthPost has committed $40,000 to kick-start Oxfam’s campaign to reach over 1 million people by the end of 2017.
With our help, Oxfam will work with local partners to provide much needed water, sanitation, hygiene, food and livelihood support. They will provide specialist support to women and other vulnerable groups to address their specific needs. $40,000 can provide 800 hygiene kits for families of eight, including laundry and bath soap, menstrual items and jerry cans.
