The HealthPost Story

“The HealthPost story”

HealthPost was established by Linley Butler in 1988 and it has been open for business almost every day since. Linley is finally enjoying a well-earned retirement, but HealthPost is still very much a family business. It is now managed by Linley’s son Abel, with assistance from her daughter Lucy, and it counts many old friends among its steadily growing staff. HealthPost recently moved into new, much larger premises but it hasn’t moved far from its roots. Empathy, integrity and accessibility continue to be our guiding principles, and our fancy new building is located only a stone’s throw from HealthPost’s humble beginnings in the basement of Linley’s Collingwood home.

HealthPost was born out of genuine need. When Linley, a solo mother of three living in a remote rural area and recovering from ulcerative colitis, couldn’t access the barley grass she needed at an affordable price, she began ordering it in bulk and sharing it out around the community. As demand steadily grew, Linley employed her friend Di to help, and then Di’s friend Sandy, and for many years HealthPost remained a three-woman operation.

With the advent of online shopping, HealthPost took its wealth of natural health experience onto the web, and the business moved to another level. Eighty percent of our business now happens through the website, but you’ll still get a “real” person when you need one, by phone or email. We oversee every one of our orders with the care which our long-standing customers have come to count on.

HealthPost now has a tireless team of 25 staff, making it a significant employer in Collingwood, a tiny coastal village in Golden Bay, at the northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. HealthPost continues to be based in Golden Bay, because, essentially, we like living here. We may be in the back-of-beyond, but we send goods every day to people in locations as diverse as Auckland, Sydney, Seoul, Tokyo, London, and Rio de Janeiro. We were amazed to discover recently that one of our biggest customers is a man in Azerbaijan.

While rural living poses logistical challenges from time to time (think flooded rivers, cows on the road), we believe that our extraordinarily beautiful location is a big part of who we are (check out our Golden Bay photo galleries if you need convincing). It would be crazy to live in paradise and not have time to enjoy it, and HealthPost endeavours to foster good relationships and a healthy work-life balance for all staff. We believe that we have a very special bunch of people here, and that these people are at the heart of the service we provide. Many of us work an unconventional week to accommodate other passions: pottery, music, kayaking, print-making, writing, fishing, chi gong, horticulture, horse-riding, tramping, to name but a few. We all work hard, but it would be rather ironic to sell health while slave-driving ourselves.

HealthPost is truly committed to balancing profits and principles. We believe in the products that we sell and we are proud to be a part of people taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. We demonstrate our commitment to natural health by making a huge range of natural products as accessible as possible, keeping the price down and delivering swiftly and widely. We endeavour to stay abreast of the ever-changing health regulations and campaign for the continued availability of safe and natural solutions in New Zealand and beyond. We take pleasure in supporting other local businesses with excellent ethical credentials and helping New Zealand’s natural health and skincare products enjoy the international success that they deserve.

doing WELL

HealthPost's humanitarian and environmental programme:

At HealthPost we believe that the wellness of the individual is always connected to the health of the broader community and the natural environment. As a business, we are focusing increasingly on environmental, cultural and ethical sustainability. We recognise that our customers are conscious not only of price but want to make a purchase that they can feel good about on all levels. It is not enough to BE well, we also need to DO well.

Now that we are, financially-speaking, “doing well” it’s time to put our money where our mouth is. We are currently developing planting schemes with the intention of becoming carbon neutral and also operate a '$1.00 donation with every web order' gifting programme.  We've donated $60,170 dollars via this programme as of 18th January 2012.

We'll make a $1.00 donation for every completed web order:

HealthPost will donate one dollar for every completed website order. We let you choose who you'd like our donation to go to (from a selection of worthy causes) as it's your support which makes this possible. We'll make the donation, all you need to do is select your preferred cause at checkout.

Thank you for helping us make a difference.
