Anxiety Info

Anxiety is characterised by the worry or irrational fear that something bad will happen. It is a remnant of our evolutionary past (when humans were more at threat from wild animals and natural disaster) and is a normal stress response, observed in all other animals. It can become a debilitating condition if the anxiety appears in response to normal, 'non-threatening' situations. This form of anxiety disorder places a sufferer into a tense or nervous state of mind, constantly expecting something terrible to happen to them whether physically or emotionally.

Symptoms of anxiety disorders often place the afflicted into a chronic state of unease making it difficult for them to concentrate. On top of this they are often irritable, have tense muscles and difficulties sleeping. The main symptom is an inability to overcome the irrational urge to be worried about ‘everything.’ Allopathic medicine attempts to alleviate anxiety with a myriad of psychoactive drugs that manipulate the mechanism of action of neurotransmitter signalling. These medications either bind directly to the neurotransmitter receptors hereby activating or blocking them. Sometimes they also increase the existing amounts of neurotransmitters available through the feedback loop. It is important to mention that psychoactive drugs do not address the underlying cause of the anxiety.

The underlying cause usually relates to an imbalance in certain hormonal and metabolic indicators that our bodies express in an attempt to adapt to chronic stress. Elevated homocysteine and sex hormone levels are an important indicator that mainstream physicians often overlook. Anxiety is a very complex disorder, and must be addressed as such in order to achieve any form of symptomatic relief. Dietary supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as found in fish oil and flaxseed oil support proper neurological function. Magnesium and natural herbs like rhodiola together with a healthy eating regime and certain stress management techniques can help optimize the body’s stress response.

Supplementing with B vitamins and certain amino acids may help provide the nutrients required by the body to promote proper neurotransmitter signalling and also synthesis of receptors. St John's wort and also aromatherapy with essential oils (e.g. frankincense) may help calm the mind and ease the symptoms of nervousness.
