Flu Info

Influenza, commonly known as "the flu", is a highly infectious disease caused by a family of influenza viruses. It affects mainly the throat, lungs and nose. The most common symptoms are chills, sore throat, fever, runny nose, muscle pains, headaches, coughing, fatigue and general body discomfort.

In most cases of the flu, recovery takes up to 2 weeks. Some people are at high risk for developing severe flu-related complications (like bacterial pneumonia). These people include the elderly (65 or older) and people with pre-existing medical conditions (asthma, lung diseases, diabetes) and those with compromised immune systems.

Although it is often confused with other influenza-like illnesses (like the common cold,) influenza is a more severe disease caused by a completely different virus. Influenza may produce nausea and vomiting, particularly in children, but these symptoms are more common in the unrelated gastroenteritis, which is sometimes inaccurately referred to as "stomach flu" or "24-hour flu".

There some natural health remedies that may help alleviate the symptoms of the flu. It is important to see your health care practitioner, if you believe you are infected with the influenza virus.
