Sore Throat Info

A sore throat (or throat pain) is pain or irritation of the throat. A common physical symptom, it is usually caused by acute pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat), although it can also appear as a result of trauma, diphtheria, or other conditions. A sore throat may cause mild to extreme pain.

A sore throat is pain anywhere in the oropharynx (which is a fancy word for your throat canal.)

A sore throat is usually from irritation or inflammation. The most common cause (80% of people who complain about pain in the throat) is acute viral pharyngitis, a viral infection of the throat. Other causes include other infections (such as streptococcal pharyngitis,) trauma, and tumours. Gastro-oesophageal (acid) reflux can cause stomach acid to leak up into the throat, causing the throat to become sore.

Another contributing factor to sore throats is unexpressed emotional distress.  The mouth and throat area is the 'avenue of expression' – our main channel of communication.  Holding back something that needs to be said can be an underlying cause of irritation and inflammation in the throat.

There are some natural health remedies that may help alleviate the pain and remove the symptoms as well as helping boost the immune system to prevent further infection. Vitamin C and zinc are important here. Herbs that are specific for sore throats are thyme, sage and myrrh.

  • Outstanding

This product is fantastic. I take one every night to help with sore throat due to postnasal drip. The rest of the family take one or two at the first sign of a cold, and it seems to really help (and sometimes it appears that the cold is stopped in its tracks too). I wouldnt be without them.

  • Helps stop cough attacks

With air conditioning making the air dry at work I would get cough attacks on the phone. The Comvita olive leaf lozenges stopped these attacks in their tracks and helped me get over the last symptoms of my cold. Will always keep a stash now!
