Baby colic is a condition in which an otherwise healthy baby cries or displays symptoms of distress and discomfort (by cramping and moaning) frequently and for extended periods, without obvious reason. Colic is directly associated with the nervous system, because of the large number of neurons in the digestive tract. In fact it’s sometimes dubbed the ‘second brain’ because of the complex nervous system lining your gut. So some kind of stress in the gut is the obvious thing to look for in cases of baby colic. The colic may be due to shock or tension trapped in the tissues after a difficult or stressful birth process. Craniosacral therapy is a safe and effective treatment for resolving birth trauma and colic associated with it. Another cause of baby colic to consider is a reaction to something the mother has consumed, transferred to the baby via the breastmilk. Anything the breastfeeding mother eats or drinks will be ingested by the baby, so attention to diet is important for your baby’s digestive health.
It is also known as infantile colic. Generally speaking, it is a condition in which an otherwise healthy baby cries or displays symptoms of distress (cramping, contractions, moaning, etc.) frequently and for extended periods, without any discernible reason. The condition typically appears within the first month of life and often disappears rather suddenly, before the baby is three to four months old, but can last up to one year.
The medical definition of colic is a condition of a healthy baby in which it shows periods of intense, unexplained fussing/crying that lasts more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks.
The causes of colic have not been settled by medicine or science. One study found that children that were diagnosed with migraines were nearly three times as likely to have experienced colic as babies, suggesting colic may be an early response to migraine headaches. Another study concluded that babies who are not breastfed are almost twice as likely to have colic.
Lactating women should avoid chocolate, brassica, onions, and cow's milk as these may worsen symptoms.
The crying often increases during a specific period of the day, particularly the early evening. Symptoms may worsen soon after feeding, especially in babies that do not belch easily.
Natural remedies that deal with treating colic are mostly focussed on relaxing the abdominal muscles, in turn calming and soothing the baby. Fennel extract as well as homeopathic chamomile and tabacum preparations may help alleviate the cramping symptoms.
Ok, I read all the other reviews and think either I have a strange sense of smell or a weird batch. This does not smell like lavender to me, and seems quite a harsh scent. I've used lavender for years, all different brands, but have relegated this one to laundry use.
Love this stuff. I mix it with my moisturiser and apply to my hands and face before bed. Has definitely improved my sleep quality.
I have always loved this product it smells beautiful
