Ringworm / Dermatophytosis Info
“The vice-president of an advertising agency is a bit of executive fungus that forms on a desk that has been exposed to conference.”
Infection with ringworm (also known as ‘dermatophytosis’) is a condition caused by a fungal infection of the skin in us humans, our domesticated animals (sheep and cattle) and common household pets like cats. The term 'ringworm' is a bit misleading, as the condition is not caused by a parasitic worm but rather by several different species of fungi.
The fungi that cause parasitic infection are called dermatophytes. These dermatophytes feed on keratin in the skin, hair, and nails of its selected hosts. They thrive on skin that is warm and moist, but can also survive directly on the outside of hair follicles or in their interior.
Often, misdiagnosis can result in the treatment of ringworm with a topical steroid (a standard treatment of the superficially similar pityriasis rosea). This can result in tinea incognito, a condition where ringworm fungus will grow without typical features like a distinctive raised border.
There are several natural health products available for ring worm infection.
Horopito is a NZ native plant used to treat ringworm in the rongoa tradition of Maori herbal medicine. It has a proven generalised anti-fungal action and is an effective treatment.
Manuka is another NZ native with amazing anti-microbial action, including specific anti-fungal properties. It can be taken internally in tea or tincture form, or applied topically in the form of manuka honey or manuka oil.
Tea tree oil is a known antifungal agent, and has been shown to be effective in vitro against multiple dermatophytes found on the skin of humans.
Echinacea has also been linked to potentially stimulating the immune system’s response to pathogens including fungi, precisely due to its augmenting effect on the immune system.
Great product bad labelling
I have had several products from Skybright and the products are great, but the ink on the label rubs off so you need to write the important information somewhere else as the cream seems to remove the print from the labels.
A regular user of ESTER C
We have used this product at one a day for years, and only get an occasional indication of a cold that rarely
develops into anything more serious.
must item in the house
I always have tea tree oil in our household. It is such a useful and reliable antiseptic commodity. I use it for gargle, cleaning floor and toilet, etc.
