Nutra-Life’s Chromium Picolinate 400µg is a well absorbed form of chromium, and is especially beneficial when diets are high in refined carbohydrates (e.g. cakes, biscuits, fried foods, processed foods), as intake of these foods decrease chromium levels in the body.
Chromium is an essential trace element, commonly used to help normalise blood sugar levels and manage appetite - especially appetite for carbohydrate or sweet foods. Chromium plays a key role in the Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) - a process involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats to energy.

Chromium and blood sugar balance
Imbalances in blood sugar levels are very common - have you ever had the mid-afternoon energy slump which disappears after eating something sweet? This ‘craving’ is due to lower than normal levels of glucose in the blood which causes us to crave carbohydrates or sugar. This craving can often be accompanied by fatigue, mood swings, reduced energy and concentration levels.
The Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF)
Chromium plays a key role in the GTF. The GTF works with insulin to facilitate the uptake of glucose into the cells. Without chromium, blood sugar levels stay elevated because the action of insulin is blocked and glucose is unable into be transported to the cells.
Eating a diet high in wholegrains, vegetables and fibre will also help to stabilise blood sugar levels.
Chromium for weight control
Normal blood sugar levels can aid in management of appetite by controlling the ‘craving’ for carbohydrate or sweet foods. Chromium can also help to increase lean muscle tissue. Having greater lean muscle tissue means more fat can potentially be burned by the muscles.

Separate chromium supplements and antacid medication by at least 2 hours. Antacid preparations may interfere with chromium absorption.
Corticosteroids may cause an increased requirement for chromium.

I have a 3pm sugar craving problem and this badly affects my energy levels. I was recommended to take chromium. This chromium eases this craving in a subtle way, and has balanced some of my sugar-related energy swings, although I still need to use some willpower to completely reduce the chances of reaching for a 3pm biscuit (or three). I have heard that chromium is low in NZ soils, and therefore low in our food supply, so I feel that it is a worthwhile mineral to take.
