Goji Berries & Juice Info
What are Goji Berries?
Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) grow in the high altitude of the Himalayan region. Also known as Chinese Wolfberry, the goji berry plant belongs to the Solanaceae (nightshade) family which includes potatoes, tomatoes, aubergine, capsicum, chilli, paprika, tamarillo and tobacco.
Goji berries are another of nature’s super foods, a whole food containing concentrated amounts of many nutrients including immune-stimulating polysaccharides, which some claim make goji berries the highest food source of antioxidants in the world. They are also packed with proteins, amino acids, trace minerals, vitamins and other phytonutrients.
Over a long history spanning thousands of years, goji berries have been used by the peoples of China, Tibet and India to promote longevity and improve fertility and sexual function. Today they are available as whole berries or in juice, puree, tablet and capsule form.
Goji Berry Benefits
Goji berries support and stimulate healthy immune function, stimulate pituitary function, protect the retina and improve eyesight, support cardiovascular health through improved circulation, and protect the liver and kidneys. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine by strengthening Yin balance in the liver, lungs and kidneys, goji berries improve sperm production.
Goji berries help reduce symptoms of premature aging through their high antioxidant content.
Goji Berry Side Effects and Contraindications
When consumed as a food in either berry or juice form, there are no contraindications or side effects for goji berries. In capsule form, containing concentrated extract of goji berries, caution is recommended if taking blood thinning medication. If pregnant or breastfeeding consult with your health practitioner before taking in concentrated supplement form. Caution recommended for people sensitive to nightshade family plants (Solanaceae).
I use this everyday in my smoothie and it really makes it much nicer tasting for me especially when using strong ingredients like chlorella and spirulina. It's great mixed in plain yoghurt also, gives it a lovely natural strawberry flavour. Great way to get extra nutrients into the kids and also great for adults too, I just use two teaspoons instead of one (it has exactly the same ingredientsin the same amounts as the adult version but the 'kids' version is cheaper!).
I have tasted this product and find it palatable, but my grandsons ( 10 & 4 yrs ) didn't like it at all ! Disappointing - I made the choice for an alternative type of drink but I
won't order it again. The boys drink a lot of water and are used to that choice i guess !!
My daughter and I love this in her morning smoothie, apple, mango and passionfruit juice, banana, berries, kiwifruit and the powder takes the taste to another level as well as adding bonus nutrients, yum.
