Saw Palmetto Info

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens or Sabal serrulata) is a small fan palm found growing wild in the warm climates of the south eastern US. It is high in fatty acids, phytosterols and flavonoids.

Historically native Americans used the berries of saw palmetto for its aphrodisiac qualities and to treat frequent urination in males. They were also traditionally used by women to stimulate breast enlargement and lactation, improve libido and support the health of the female reproductive system.

Today saw palmetto’s main use is in treating enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hypertrophy). It inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone to the hormone DHT, implicated in prostate enlargement.

Saw Palmetto Benefits

Saw palmetto is primarily used in men’s health, and can also benefit the female reproductive system. In men it supports prostate gland health, normalising urinary flow and sexual function. It supports the male glandular system in general, strengthening immunity and reducing inflammation. It may prevent testosterone-related cancers and is a great hormone balancing herb for men over 40. Its anti-androgenic effect gives saw palmetto a role in prevention and treatment of male pattern baldness.

In women saw palmetto acts as a reproductive hormone balancer, tonic and to improve sexual function. The anti-androgenic action helps reduce excess hair growth associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), while an anti-estrogenic effect gives it a role in treating estrogen dominance.

Saw palmetto is also a tonic for the nervous system, relieving anxiety and tension. It has an expectorant action helpful in respiratory conditions.

Saw Palmetto Side Effects

There are no side effects if taken as directed. Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to hormonal effect. Not recommended for children. Saw palmetto may interfere with some medications – consult your health practitioner if you are taking any drugs.
