What is Psyllium Husk?

Psyllium husks, the powdered seeds of the plantain species plantago psyllium and plantago ovata are a safe, gentle and natural bulk-forming laxative, used since ancient times by Asian, European and North African peoples.  One of the first medicinal plants taken to the Americas from Europe, the tiny seeds contain high mucilage causing them to swell up when combined with water.  It is this bulking property that promotes intestinal cleansing and good bowel function.

Psyllium Husk Benefits

By adding bulk to the stool, psyllium husk restores the smooth transition of waste through the intestinal tract,

absorbing putrefaction and other toxins, soothing inflammation, and helping restore balanced gut flora.  Constipation, diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, mucous colitis, diverticulitis, diverticulosis and haemorrhoids can all be relieved.  Psyllium has a role in supporting cardiovascular health and weight management through improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels.  As part of a high fibre diet it can help prevent or improve diabetes through lowered insulin and blood sugar levels.

Psyllium Husk Side Effects and Contraindications

  • Take psyllium supplements with lots of water – at least a glass per dose on top of normal fluid intake.  Without the water the psyllium may swell in the gastrointestinal tract and in extreme cases can cause choking.

  • Contraindicated if you have difficulty swallowing, and in cases of oesophageal stricture or any other narrowing through the digestive tract.

  • Prescription drugs may be less effective if taken with psyllium, so take them at different times of the day.

Psyllium Husk Reviews

"I take Psyllium every day. I no longer get any bloating and a good way to increase the fibre. Keeps you regular too. A good price on healthpost."
