Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) that is made in the lower colon by bacterial fermentation of resistant starch. It is an important fuel source for colonocytes, the cells that line the colon, as it supports their functionality. Butyrate also supports the gut lining and function.

Poor food choices, modern day living and antibiotic use can reduce the levels of butyrate-producing bacteria.
