They say that all good health starts with the gut – and we agree. A healthy, well-functioning digestive system supports all our body systems, right down to the processes inside of our cells. An important and often-missed component of digestive health is fibre. Generally, we get most of our fibre through a varied diet, however there are times when we may need some extra support by way of a fibre supplement.
A fibre powder can be easily added to a morning smoothie, or for a sweet treat packed with protein and high in fibre, try our Oaty Protein Bites – the perfect high fibre snack for when you’re on-the-go. Our fibre supplements are also available as easy to take fibre capsules, and fibre tablets.
How much fibre do I need?
Research recommends a daily fibre intake of 25 grams for women, and 20 grams for men. There are 2 types of fibre that we need to include, insoluble and soluble – and most unprocessed foods contain a mix of both. Some good sources of fibre are:
- Vegetables, fruit, and leafy greens.
- Wholegrains, beans, chickpeas, and lentils.
- Nuts and seeds.
Most processed foods, and fruit juices contain very little fibre – instead of juice it’s ideal to eat a piece of fruit to get all that wonderful fibre.
Why do I need Fibre?
Dietary fibre plays an important role in digestion, waste elimination, and the health of our microbiome:
- Dietary fibre slows down digestion, supporting a slower and steady release of dietary sugars – which is good for healthy blood sugars.
- Soluble fibre dissolves in water, binding to wastes, toxins, and excess dietary fats in the gut - supporting their removal from the body during a bowel movement. If you need some extra support for comfortable bowel movements, try some Slippery Elm alongside your fibre supplement.
- Insoluble fibre does not readily dissolve so it bulks out our stools and keeps us regular with daily bowel motions.
- Our microbiome loves fibre – especially fibre from various plants, vegetables, and fruit. The fibre that our microbiome thrive on are known as Prebiotics.
- Dietary Fibre also keeps you fuller for longer, this is something to keep in mind if you’re making dietary changes or wanting to maintain a healthy weight.
If you’re finding it challenging to get enough fibre through your diet, then a fibre supplement may be just what you need to support regular motions, so you feel light and bright.
