Frequently asked questions about herbal tea

What is the difference between herbal tea and regular tea?

Herbal tea is made from plants other than Camellia sinensis, the plant responsible for black, green and white tea. Unlike traditional tea, herbal teas are usually naturally caffeine-free. Every product in this collection is caffeine-free, making herbal tea a practical daily alternative for anyone reducing stimulants, as well as a reliable evening drink for people who find caffeine affects their sleep.

The antioxidants and phytochemicals in herbal teas also vary by plant. Chamomile, elderberry, rosehip, lemon balm and passionflower each bring a different nutrient profile to the cup.

Is herbal tea caffeine-free?

All herbal teas in this collection are naturally caffeine-free. HealthPost stocks single-herb options such as chamomile, elderberry, rosehip and more, alongside curated blends that combine two or more herbs.

If you want to create your own blend, loose-leaf formats let you mix herbs in whatever ratio suits your taste.

How long should you steep herbal tea?

Steep herbal tea for five to ten minutes in freshly boiled water. This is longer than the two to three minutes most people use for black tea, but the longer contact time helps develop the flavour and plant compounds in herbal teas.

Roots such as dandelion and licorice can handle a full ten minutes, while flowers such as chamomile and passionflower are usually ready after five minutes.

For iced herbal tea, brew a double-strength batch using two tea bags or two teaspoons of loose-leaf tea per cup, then cool and pour over ice. Elderberry and rosehip are great choices for iced tea because their fruit-based compounds produce deep colour and clean tartness when cold.

After opening, store tea in an airtight container away from light to preserve freshness.

Are HealthPost’s herbal tea bags plastic-free?

Yes. All herbal tea bags at HealthPost are plastic-free as part of the our Ethical by Nature Promise. Conventional tea bags often use polypropylene plastic as a heat-seal binding agent, which can release microplastics into the brew. Every bag in this collection removes that risk.
