What is Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)?

Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone, ubidecarenone and vitamin Q. Discovered in 1957, CoQ10 is an antioxidant that also works are part of the body's natural energy production process. It’s found in high levels in our mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell. The brain, heart, kidneys and liver have comparatively more mitochondria because they have high energy needs, so they contain higher levels of CoQ10.

Ubiquinol vs Ubiquinone

CoQ10 supplements come in two main forms: Ubiquinol, the active antioxidant form or Ubiquinone, which your body converts into ubiquinol. This makes ubiquinol slightly more bioavailable than ubiquinone, however if you’re healthy, the body caneasily convert ubiquinone into its more useable form. The CoQ10 circulating in the blood is mostly in the ubiquinol form (around 90% in people with good health).
