Description
Doctor's Best Fully Active Folate 400: Folate is an important B vitamin also known as B9. B9 works with vitamin B12, as a methyl-group donor involved in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. There are three well-known supplemental forms of folate; Folic Acid, Folinic Acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF).
Doctors Best Fully Active Folate with Quatrefolic® contains 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) which is the methylated and most biologically active form of folate. It is the body’s ultimate resource for methyl groups, which are essential in supporting numerous enzymes that support a complex web of metabolic pathways such as DNA and hormone pathways and brain and nerve cell protection.
Folate supports a healthy mood, mental clarity and focus, circulation, healthy red blood cell formation and many other metabolic processes. The body cannot make folate on its own and it must be obtained from foods or supplementation. Gene-level regulation, cell growth patterns and tissue repair can all be affected if folate levels are too low. Higher levels of folate are sometimes required during pregnancy to support neural tube development.
Folic acid is a heat stable synthetic form of folate. It is unmethylated and has the capacity to be converted to the active form, 5-MTHF, in healthy individuals via a highly complex, multistep process. There are several factors including genetics, malabsorption, some diseases, and lack of sufficient co-factors that may inhibit this conversion.
Folinic acid is an immediate pre-cursor to 5,10 methylenetetrahydrofolate which is the step prior to the formation of 5-MTHF. Folinic acid is an active, but not methylated form of folate.
Green leafy vegetables are regarded as the highest food source of folates, along with brewer’s yeast, sprouts, organ meats, i.e. liver and kidney and some fruits. Many of the dietary sources are complex and mixed variable mixtures of folate compounds. Although folates are abundant in the diet, these compounds can easily be destroyed by processing and cooking and many individuals do not consume high enough amounts of folate-rich foods. It is thought that folate deficiency is one of the most common and widespread nutritional deficiencies.
