Why are omega 3 supplements important?

Omega-3 oils are essential for brain, joint, skin health – and so much more. These essential fatty acids keep us feeling good from within. More importantly, we can’t make them ourselves, so it's important to have them daily.

We often have too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3 in our modern diets. That's where omega 3 supplements can help fill nutritional gaps.

EPA and DHA

Fish oil, cod liver oil and algae oil contain EPA (eicosapentanoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Studies show that EPA and DHA offer many health benefits.

The human body can make EPA and DHA from hemp seed oil and flaxseed oil. But this is a complex process, so fish oil, cod liver oil and algae oil are easier for the body to use.

What are the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids?

Studies show that EPA and DHA from omega 3 support:

  • Heart health - including balanced cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Skin health - skin barrier support and soft aging
  • Joint health - comfortable and flexible joints
  • Brain health - happy mood and brain aging

Essential omega oils

You can choose from any of these omegas to support your wellbeing.

Algae oil

Algae oil has the highest levels of EPA and DHA compared to other plant oils. The most renewable and sustainable Omega 3 - it's fast growing, needs less water and land area to grow.

Fish oil

Fish oil offers the highest amount of omega 3. With the most research behind it for health support - it's high in EPA and DHA. The most conventional and well known Omega 3, it's the one your GP is more likely to know about.

Cod liver oil

Cod liver oil has omega 3, vitamin D, and vitamin A. Lower in EPA and DHA compared to fish oil. But the plus is the natural immune loving vitamin D and skin-loving vitamin A.

Flaxseed oil

Flaxseeds are high in omega 3 fatty acids. Flaxseed oil has 1:4 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. So it's a great option for general health and to supplement our modern diets. Compared to hempseed it has more omega 3. So if you do eat meat, eggs and dairy, flaxseed is generally a better choice than hemp seed.

Hemp seed oil

Hemp seed oil is ideal for vegans because it has higher levels of omega 6. than omega 3. Hemp seed oil has a 3:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. Hemp seeds are high in protein too - making them a great wholefood supplement for vegans.

Evening primrose oil

Evening Primrose oil contains GLA - (gamma linolenic acid). Studies show GLA supports skin health, including skin hydration and skin barrier function. Popular for PMS and Menopause support too.

Evening primrose oil is unique from other omega supplements. It mainly contains omega 6. So, it's best taken in combination with another omega 3 rich oil, like flaxseed or fish oil.

Naturopath tip:
If you're finding it tricky to choose an omega supplement because they all sound great. Try omega cycling, you can rotate your omegas and take a different one each month.
