Garlic Info

Garlic is the common name of the plant Allium sativa, closely related to onions, shallots, leeks and chives. Originally from central Asia and with a history dating back 6000 years, its culinary and medicinal use spread to the ancient cultures clustered around the Mediterranean, such as Egypt and Greece, centuries ago.

With a distinctive pungent odour due to its many sulphur compounds, garlic has a reputation as ‘nature’s antibiotic’ and is a highly effective broad spectrum anti-microbial against bacteria, viruses, worms and fungi.

Garlic Benefits

Garlic was used by the ancients to treat intestinal, digestive, respiratory and low energy complaints. Modern research confirms its significant immune boosting and cardio-protective effects. With high concentrations of the trace mineral selenium, garlic is also a potent antioxidant.

Specifically, garlic reduces the risk of blood clots by inhibiting platelet aggregation in arteries and thinning the blood, increasing its flow. It helps the body maintain normal cholesterol levels and regulate blood pressure.

Garlic’s strong immune protective action helps control most microbial outbreaks including colds, flu, ENT infections, genital herpes, candidiasis and tinia. Studies also indicate an anti-neoplastic effect with garlic intake contributing to decreased risk of some cancers.

Garlic Side Effects

Garlic’s pungent smell can be obvious on the breath, skin and sweat when consumed in large amounts. Parsley is nature’s answer to ‘garlic breath’, neutralising the smell when they are consumed together. Consuming large amounts can cause gastrointestinal upsets. Raw garlic applied topically has caused allergic dermatitis, burning and blisters in some reported cases. Caution is needed if taking anticoagulant medication because of garlic’s anti-clotting action. Culinary quantities are safe to consume and supplements taken as directed are also safe.

    I have a GP who was hell bent on putting me on Warfrin or some other nasty blood thinners as I have genetic heart problems that I was born with. After alot of research into natural blood thinning foods & supplements this product works well in combination with other lifestyle changes like cleaning up diet, more exercise & weight loss. After lots of blood tests my doctor is satisfied that my natural approach to the prevention of strokes is sufficient to not have to take chemical blood thinners - for now. I still have to take my other heart meds but now that I'm way healthier I shouldn't need to be prescribed pills that I don't need till I'm hopefully older. But I ALWAYS check with my doctor before taking anything natural in case it interferres with any of my heart medications very important not to self medicate as much as I would like to not have to take any of these heart meds, natural medicines are not always possible or advisable for certain conditions.

  • Garlic - mosquito deterrent.

    I have been taking 3 Vita-Fit 6000mg garlic tablets daily for some time now, in conjunction with ubiquinol and magnesium, to improve my cardio-vascular system. The most surprising reward of taking these garlic tablets however, here in Queensland, is that mosquitoes will not land on me! Although I do not exude any noticeable garlic odour, it is enough to deter mosquitoes and so reduces or eliminates my risk of getting mosquito borne diseases. I can be surrounded by hovering mosquitoes at sunset and not one will land on me!
