What are the adrenals?
The adrenals are two very little glands sitting on top of the kidneys. But don’t be fooled by their size– they produce over 50 hormones, some of them life sustaining, including stress hormones. The adrenals are part of a network involved in regulating essential body functions including body temperature, blood pressure, sleep and digestion, fertility, and immune responses, find out about how stress and immunity are linked. At menopause, the adrenals become the main source for production of progesterone and oestrogen, which are important for wellbeing, healthy bone tissue and libido.
What is the stress response?
During a stressful event the adrenal glands release stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol), which prepare the body to escape the stressful scenario. The stress response’s main purpose is to keep us safe and alive, and is commonly known as the ‘fight, flight, freeze’ response. When we’re faced with long term stress or pressure, these stress hormones can lead to other imbalances in the body.
