Apple Cider Vinegar Info

Vinegar has been used by many cultures for centuries for a variety of reasons. Hippocrates (460 – 377BCE) is said to have used it for cleaning ulcers and sores (Johnston & Gaas, 2006), while Japanese Samurai consumed vinegar as a strengthening tonic.

It contains acetic acid, an antibacterial and antifungal chemical, which gives vinegar its sour smell. As well as acetic acid, there are many other bioactive compounds including antioxidants and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus which are required for many functions for optimal health and wellbeing (Conde Nast, 2014).  With vinegar having high antioxidant activity, as well as antimicrobial properties, it means that as the body ages or deals with chronic inflammation, there is some support to counter the effects of these.

ACV has had interesting results when studied for being of benefit for blood sugar dysregulation. The acetic acid can help the way the body converts sugar into a stored form (glycogen) within the muscles, as well as supporting insulin sensitivity and prompting cells to metabolise glucose (Allen, 2015). It may also support blood sugar because it can help to slow down the way the stomach empties complex carbohydrates, therefore giving the body smaller amounts of sugar over a longer period of time for more stable blood glucose levels.

As well as taking Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in a small amount of warm water, it can also be used in plenty of interesting ways:

  • Salad dressings
  • Household cleaner
  • Directly onto weeds as a weed killer
  • Flea deterrent on pets
  • Rinsed in the hair
