What is Vitamin A?

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin and is not synthesised by the body, so must be obtained from dietary sources.  Retinol is the preformed vitamin A in animal foods, while plant foods provide the provitamin A carotenoids, the precursors that are converted in the body to vitamin A.

Vitamin A is essential for eye health and optimal vision, and deficiency causes reduced night vision and ultimately blindness and death.  Other important functions of Vitamin A are in bone growth, tissue healing, immune function and mucous membrane health.

Vitamin A Benefits

Vitamin A helps maintain healthy mucous membranes, the linings of the mouth, digestive tract, respiratory system and genitourinary tract.  Vitamin A reduces susceptibility to infectious diseases and allergic or inflammatory conditions affecting the mucous membranes.  Colds, flu, viral infections, sinusitis and hayfever, asthma, rhinitis, eye and ear infections, UTIs, vaginitis, thrush measles, chicken pox, AIDS and pneumonia are all more common when vitamin A is deficient.   It is vital for good immune function and can beneficially treat many types of skin disorder.

Vitamin A Side Effects and Contraindications

  • During pregnancy the betacarotene precursor to vitamin A is the safe form of supplement.

  • High doses over a long term can be toxic.

  • Caution in cases of liver damage, cirrhosis or hepatitis.

Vitamin A Reviews

"Betacarotene is a staple supplement for post DS surgery. Very easy to take."

– Catherine about Nature's Own Betacarotene 6mg

"This is a staple product for me. I take one every other day and find it keeps my skin and nails looking good. I also got recommended it by a pharmacist to take when feeling a cold/flu bug coming on - taking 3 a day for 3 days and then not taking it again for a few weeks (due to bioaccumulation of Vit A in liver). THIS WORKS! i swear by it now for this immunity function - its not just Vit C that is needed at these times, it seems. This is a very good price too."

– Kim about Thompson's Vitamin A 10,000iu

"I suffer from psoriasis and did a bit of research on vit a and decided to try it. I take it for 3-4 days and then stop to make sure it's not building up in my liver, but have found a significant improvement in my skin since I started taking it last month."

– Liz about Thompson's Vitamin A 10,000iu
