5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) supplements are sourced from wild crafted seeds of the plant Griffonia simplicifolia - native to Central and West Africa. 5-HTP is the metabolic precursor to serotonin, the neurotransmitter so important for brain function and mental health. 5-HTP supplements can mediate the serotonin pathway to help maintain optimum levels of serotonin.
Our cardiovascular system, kidneys, immune system and gastrointestinal tract are all influenced by serotonin levels. Serotonin is also a mood balancer, soothing the nervous system and enhancing feelings of wellbeing. It’s important in temperature regulation, appetite control, libido, blood pressure regulation, memory and learning, and how we age. Serotonin deficiency can cause insomnia, mood disorders, depression, aggressive behaviour, anxiety, eating disorders, OCD, autism, schizophrenia, pain sensitivity, fibromyalgia, migraine and PMS.
Clinical studies comparing 5-HTP with prescription antidepressants have shown identical results using the standard depression scale with human study groups.
Other studies have demonstrated the benefits of 5-HTP supplementation in cases of anxiety, panic disorder, sleep difficulties, and obesity/weight loss problems. Some cases of tinnitus may also benefit.
5-HTP Side Effects
Temporary digestive upsets can occur if 5-HTP is not taken with food.
Vivid dreams or nightmares can happen while the body adjusts to higher serotonin levels initially.
Contraindicated for children, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers and those with cardiovascular, kidney or liver disease.
People taking medication for Parkinson’s disease, on SSRI drugs (e.g. Prozac) or any of the group of MAOI antidepressants should not supplement 5-HTP as well. Check with your doctor if you’re not sure what class of medication you’re taking.
Got these for my teenage daughter
My daughter has been suffering with mild depression and anxiety and wanted to try something natural rather than go down the road of antidepressants.
She has been taking them for a month now and feels better balanced mood wise and her anxiety is not as bad.
Am now increasing the dose to 2 at night in the hopes that it will also help with her sleep.
Can't believe the difference I feel since taking 'Deep Sleep' no longer do I wake up every couple of hours through the night and I seem to go off to sleep easier. No more lying there for hours waiting to full asleep.
Recommend for getting to sleep
I was finding it hard to get to sleep and starting to get anxious about getting to sleep. Aside from giving up coffee, I‘ve found that taking two of these at bedtime helps eliminate that anxiety and I am having deep refreshing sleeps now. I have tried other herbal supplements in pill and tincture form but this is the product I have found most effective.
