Australian naturopath Hannah Jones was shocked to discover that very few cosmetic products were cruelty free and vegan friendly, and many were full of potentially harmful ingredients that people and the planet. So, she launched her own brand, Hanami in 2016 to tick those boxes and more. As a kind of paint, there’s no such thing as natural nail polish, but many of them contain known toxins such as: Toluene, Benzophenone, Formaldehyde, Xylene and Parabens – to name just a few.

Thankfully, some nail polish brands now aim to reduce the health risks to consumers by incorporating cleaner ingredients and leaving out questionable chemicals in their formulas. You see such products marketed as 3-free, 5-free, 7-free and more recently, 10-free. The higher the number, the safer the product is. Please note that Hanami is not Good Ingredients Approved (no nail polish can be as they are not natural), the polishes do contain N-butyl alcohol, a fragrance ingredient, as well as propylene glycol, PEG40, and DMDM hydantoin in their polish removers, ingredients which are otherwise on our Red List.
