Chocolate is made using the beans of the cacao tree. These superfood beans are high in beneficial nutrients and protective antioxidants including:

  • Magnesium
  • Theobromine
  • Flavonoids
  • Epicatechin
  • Catechin
  • Linoleic acid

The darker the chocolate, the higher the levels of phytonutrients. Cacao beans also contain small amounts of caffeine, but these levels are relatively low, especially in comparison to coffee beans.

Both cocoa and cacao come from the cacao tree, Theobroma cacao.
