Why are you changing your courier bags?

At HealthPost, we’re always looking for ways to do better by people and planet. That’s why we’re moving from our much-loved paper-based courier bags to ones made from recycled plastic pollution – specifically certified ‘Ocean Bound’ plastic, rescued before it can enter the sea. These new bags, called POLLAST!C, are a step forward in our sustainability journey and part of our commitment as a B Corp and Zero Carbon business. You can learn more about this mindful move, here.

Why are you changing from paper to plastic?

When we first introduced paper-based courier bags, they were the best option available – made from post-consumer waste and easy to recycle. At the time, soft plastics recycling wasn’t widely available in NZ, and compostable mailers didn’t meet our standards due to lack of recyclability.

But paper has downsides too. Paper courier bags are comparatively heavy and made using older, coal-powered technology, which gives them a relatively high carbon footprint. Now that better options exist, it’s time to evolve.

Our new courier bags are made from certified Ocean Bound Plastic waste, collected from coastal areas with no formal waste infrastructure. They have a lower carbon footprint than paper – and help clean up plastic pollution before it enters the ocean.

How do I recycle the new bags?

The POLLAST!C bags can be recycled via the New Zealand Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme – just drop them off at collection points in many supermarkets and The Warehouse stores.

If you’re in a region without access, we’ll now offer a Soft Plastics Recycle Bag, so you can send them directly to Future Post – a trail-blazing New Zealand company that turns soft plastics into durable, recyclable fence posts for farms and vineyards. A free courier pick-up through NZ Post is included with every Soft Plastic Recycle Bag purchase, which you can book here.

Does this reduce HealthPost’s carbon footprint?

Yes. Independent lifecycle analysis shows POLLAST!C mailers have:

  • 79% lower CO₂ than 100% recycled paper mailers
  • 29% lower CO₂ emissions than traditional plastic mailers

They’re lighter to ship and eliminate the need for virgin materials. All this helps us stay on track with our Zero Carbon certification.

2017

Nature Trust is born

With a vision to create an ecosanctuary for native species to thrive at the top of the South Island, we work to regenerate nature at Wharariki Farewell Spit - planting thousands of trees over and above our carbon offsetting.

2020

Zero Carbon certified with Ekos

We become officially Zero Carbon certified business operations with Ekos who develop new best practice methodology for measuring emissions on our parcel deliveries – which make up almost 90% of our overall carbon footprint.

2023

We’re B Corp certified!

We’re officially a certified B Corp - recognised for meeting high standards of social and environmental impact. From the way we care for our team and customers, to our commitment to transparency and treading lightly on the planet, this milestone reflects the values we’ve held close from the very beginning.

March 2025

Sun-powered naturally

With 150+ solar panels on our roof, we’re now producing more power than we consume - so we can keep delivering wellness in a more restorative way.

July 2025

A mindful packaging shift

Our courier bags transition to certified recycled, ocean-bounded courier bags made from plastic pollution – helping reduce waste and clean up marine pollution. Learn more about the change here.

What’s ahead

Farmland restoration

Together with Manawhenua ki Mohua, Pest Free Onetahua, and DOC NZ, the HealthPost Nature Trust is transforming 200 hectare of former grazing land into an ecosanctuary where native wildlife can thrive once again. Fencing construction has just begun.
