Sea Buckthorn berries
The Best of the Bunch

Sea buckthorn berry grows high in the Tibetan Himalayas (12,000 feet above sea level) where it has to strive to survive against the harsh weather and high altitudes.  The sea buckthorn berry fortifies itself against the elements by producing an array of powerful nutrients.

While new to the West, sea buckthorn has been used in the ancient Indian system of Ayurveda for its healing properties, both physical and spiritual for at least two millennia.   Tibetans and other indigenous people have also used sea buckthorn for centuries for its healing, restorative and nutritive properties. Its medicinal value was recorded as early as the 8th century in the Tibetan medical classic – the Sibu Yidian (from which the name Sibu originates).

Now, modern research is indentifying the active constituents in sea buckthorn berry, and the ways in which these ingredients confer health benefits to those who consume it.

Sea buckthorn berries contain over 190 bioactive, highly nutritional and beneficial compounds.

The Rare Omega 7

Sea buckthorn berries provide all three omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids – well known for their benefits to cellular health.  It is also a unique source of the less well known, but highly beneficial omega 7.

Also known as palmitoleic acid, omega 7 is a naturally occurring component of the healthy skin membrane, both internally (digestive, genitourinary, respiratory tracts) and externally (skin).  Omega 7 is involved in the production of collagen, contributing to healthy skin elasticity and normal repair mechanisms.  Studies have shown omega 7 provides improvement in membrane function, skin and tissue repair, hydration and enhanced elasticity.

Antioxidant Activity

The fruit and seed of the sea buckthorn berry contain a variety of both water and fat soluble antioxidants including tocopherols and tocotrienols – collectively known as vitamin E, high levels of carotenoids, flavonols and vitamins A and C.  Antioxidants work throughout the body to ‘quench’ free radicals, inhibiting the  oxidative damage  associated with the environment, pollution, nutrient deficiencies, and one close to all New Zealander’s – the harsh New Zealand sun.
