top tips for your healthy summer

Although summer can inspire a bit of carefree living, we shouldn’t forget our health in the process. Here I share some of my top tips to help you keep healthy and happy this summer.

1. Disconnect
Take a break from technology! Connect with family and friends with real ‘facetime’ and enjoy the present moment without the selfies and hashtags. Summer is happening right in front of you and it’s the perfect time to get outside and reconnect with nature. So power-down your devices and give your brain a digital summer break – you won’t regret it!

2. Get Some Shade
Ultra-violet (UV) rays from the sun can cause sunburn, premature wrinkles and damage the eyes. It’s important to limit our time in direct sunshine, especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm when UV rays are the strongest. As much as you may want that bronze glow, we suggest you fake it till you make it with a natural tanning product. Now is also a great time to get any moles or spots checked and be sure to visit your doctor if there are any you are unsure about.

3. Move It!
It’s important to stay active each day, so use the warm, sunny weather as an opportunity to head outdoors and try some new activities. Discover a trail to hike, go for a bike ride or enjoy a stroll along the beach. Now is also the perfect time to get in the garden – a great way to give back to mother nature while also getting some gentle exercise.

4. Sip Wisely
Alcohol is commonly at the centre of many summer social gatherings, so it’s important to know your limits and always drink in moderation so you can enjoy (and remember) the night! Try alternating alcoholic beverages with sparkling water and lemon to stay hydrated and avoid going overboard. Alcohol can also lower blood sugar levels, so make sure you eat before you start drinking to keep your levels stable and to also help slow the absorption of alcohol. Lastly, make sure you have a designated driver or taxi available so you can get home safely.

5. Look After Your Locks
Swimming in the ocean along with the harsh summer sun can leave hair looking dry and damaged. Giving it some TLC with some BioBalance Certified Organic Virgin Coconut Oil or Argan oil as a natural hair treatment is a great way to help restore shine and softness and protect hair from drying elements.

6. Keep Hydrated
Long days at the beach and hot, humid weather can leave us dehydrated, causing fatigue, headaches and dry skin. As a guide, aim to drink at least 2 litres of water each day to ensure optimal hydration. Try infusing your water with lemon, cucumber, mint or berries to help enhance the flavour. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeinated beverages like coffee and fizzy drinks which tend to dehydrate the body.
