Spirulina Recipes

So you’ve bought some spirulina powder in order to reap the rewards from the super-food’s powerful nutritional profile, but how exactly are you best to take it? Hopefully these simple recipes will give you some inspiration in the kitchen and will have others green with envy at your delicious and nutritious concoctions!

Spirulina Green Juice

Ingredients:

  • 1 small cucumber
  • 2 medium sized apples
  • 1 small lemon or lime
  • 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder

Directions:

Juice the first three ingredients in a juicer and then mix/blend 1 teaspoon of Spirulina powder into the juice until a smooth consistency is achieved.

Spirulina Seasoning Salt

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons of nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Directions:

Mix all of the ingredients above together in a bowl. Sprinkle this seasoning salt over air popped popcorn, kale chips, steamed veggies, baked potato etc.

Papaya Spirulina Smoothie

  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
  • 1 fresh papaya
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup of ice

Directions

Blend all ingredients in your blender (Vitamix is the most efficient) until smooth.

Spirulina Banana Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of spirulina powder
  • 1 ½ cups of almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • ½ cup of yoghurt
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Ice, as needed

Directions:

Blend in your blend until smooth.

Tropical Spirulina Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder
  • ½ cup of pineapple juice
  • ½ cup fresh or frozen mango
  • ½ cup of ice

Directions:

Blend in your blender until smooth.

Protein Hit Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of frozen mixed berries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 scoop of protein powder of choice
  • 1 ½ teaspoons spirulina powder
  • Ice as needed

Blend in your blender until smooth/

Spirulina Vanilla Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk or almond milk
  • 1 cup chopped papaya
  • 1 kiwifruit, peeled and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Ice as needed

Directions:

Blend in your blender until smooth.

Spirulina Protein Balls

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of raw almonds
  • 2 cups of raw cashew nuts
  • 1 cup of pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of celtic sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons of natural vanilla protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of Manuka honey
  • 16 whole pitted Medjool dates
  • 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed orange juice
  • Shredded/desiccated coconut to roll balls in

Directions:

Combine all of the dry ingredients into a food processor.  Process until you get a crumb like consistency.  Add dates, honey and coconut oil and process again.  Pour in the orange juice and process for the last time.  The mix should come together when squished with the hands.  Using a teaspoon, divide the mixture into 20 balls.  Roll in coconut and store covered in the fridge until needed.
