Does Silica help with Hair loss

Silicon (Si) or Silica is the second most abundant mineral on Earth, making up 27.7% of the Earth’s crust, in the form of Crystalline Silicon (or Quartz Crystal). Silica is also abundant in our body, and more specifically in our connective tissues. This includes our Hair, Skin, Nails, Teeth, Bones, and Cartilage, Ligaments, Muscles and Blood vessels.

Silica is utilised by the body every day and is an essential component required for the healthy formation, and maintenance of all our connective tissue. Unfortunately, as we age it is harder to absorb Silica from our diet, as well as to retain it in our body. This makes it important to include foods that naturally contain silica in our diet and supplement where necessary. Foods high in Silica include: Bananas, Cucumbers, Asparagus, Strawberries, leafy green Vegetables, Brown Rice, Oats, Soybeans, Whole grains, and Beer!

Silica is an essential building block for Collagen, which is important in maintaining elasticity and flexibility in these tissues. Taking Silica can support optimal levels of Collagen in the body.

It acts as a “calcium carrier” which means it helps get Calcium out of the blood and into the connective tissues (such as our bones) more easily. Hence taking Silica for bone health is a great addition to taking calcium. It may also help in the healing of injuries or breakages to our bones, ligaments, cartilage and muscles.

Silica in the Quartz crystal form has been found to help improve the strength and flexibility of the blood vessel walls (which will contribute to a healthier Cardio vascular system). This means it can help in the prevention of Atherosclerosis. It has been found that people who have healthy blood vessel walls, have a high level of Silica in the wall membranes.

It has also been found to increase the thickness and health of our dermal layer (second layer of or skin) by up to 29%, which means it helps improve the strength and resilience of our skin against damage and fragility. Skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema, may also improve when there is more Silica available in the body.

We all worry about the health and look of our hair and nails, and Silica can help with this also!

It helps improve circulation to the scalp, as well as the integrity of the hair follicle, which may reduce or slow  hair loss in some situations. Silica is found in high concentrations in the shaft of healthy hair, and follicles. It keeps the hair, and the nails more flexible, so they don’t break as easily, and anecdotally, people comment on how much thicker and glossier their hair seems to be!!

Silica also can help reduce the effects of Aluminium in the body, by improving excretion of this toxic mineral.

So does Silica help with Hair loss??? Depending upon the reasons for the loss, it could be a good mineral to try, and the great thing is that there are so many other benefits to Silica for our bodies!
